Wind Farm Optimization: Wake Control by Upwind Turbines / Controlling Wind
Corten discovered an innovative method to enhance wind farm efficiency by using upwind wind turbines as vortex generators. This approach generates large-scale vortices that mix the atmospheric boundary layer, drawing high-speed air from higher altitudes down into the rotors of leeward turbines, significantly reducing wake losses.
Recognizing the huge potential of this method, Corten estimated that it could reduce wake losses by tens of percent. In 2001, ECN management valued the insight at multiple billions of euros, which led to the decision to file a patent. Corten personally authored the patent with the assistance of patent attorneys.
For years, Corten’s wind farm research group worked on refining this concept through wind tunnel experiments and developing practical embodiments to strengthen the patent and ensure its feasibility.
Currently, research institutions worldwide are building upon Corten's discoveries on wind farm wake effects.
